The Esports World Cup brings another major Counter-Strike 2 competition, with established teams and rising challengers fighting for one of the biggest titles on the calendar.

Team Vitality enters the conversation as one of the strongest sides to watch after a successful run of tournaments. Astralis arrives in a very different position. The organization has enormous history in Counter-Strike, but its current lineup still has plenty to prove against today’s leading teams.

That contrast makes both teams interesting heading into the tournament. Vitality has expectations to manage, while Astralis has an opportunity to outperform them.

There is also plenty happening around the event beyond the matches themselves. Fans following the tournament will find predictions, community discussions and promotions across different platforms. Stake, for example, is running an Esports World Cup betting promo covering Vitality and Astralis matches, along with the CS2 Grand Final.

But on the server, reputation and promotions mean little. What matters is current form, individual performance, preparation and how each roster handles tournament pressure.

Vitality Enter With High Expectations

Vitality began 2026 strongly by winning IEM Krakow, defeating FURIA in the final. They followed that result by taking the PGL Cluj-Napoca title with a 3-0 victory over PARIVISION in the grand final.

Those performances continued the success Vitality had already built during 2025. They won the StarLadder Budapest Major after defeating FaZe 3-1 in the final, having also eliminated The MongolZ and Team Spirit during the playoffs.

Results like these explain why expectations around Vitality are so high. This is a roster that has repeatedly shown it can perform deep into major tournaments rather than simply producing strong results during early stages.

The bigger challenge is maintaining that level when every opponent knows exactly what it is facing.

Vitality Are More Than ZywOo

Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut remains the obvious name when discussing Vitality. His ability to take over rounds and deliver under pressure gives the team an advantage few opponents can easily match.

Vitality’s strength, however, goes beyond one player.

Dan “apEX” Madesclaire provides leadership and experience. Robin “ropz” Kool brings positioning, decision-making and a reliable late-round presence. Shahar “flameZ” Shushan can create opportunities through aggressive entries, while William “mezii” Merriman gives the roster additional flexibility.

That balance matters in a tournament environment. Even elite players have quiet maps, and teams that depend too heavily on one star can struggle when that player is contained.

Vitality has enough quality across the lineup to win in several different ways.

Astralis Have Something to Prove

Astralis carries one of the most recognizable names in Counter-Strike.

Its legendary teams helped change how professional Counter-Strike was played, particularly through utility usage, positioning, preparation and structured team play. The organization’s Major-winning era remains an important part of competitive Counter-Strike history.

The current Astralis roster, however, should be judged separately from those achievements.

The lineup of HooXi, phzy, jabbi, Staehr and ryu represents a different period for the organization. Results presented for 2026 include a seventh-place finish at IEM Krakow and ninth place at PGL Cluj-Napoca, putting Astralis well behind Vitality’s early-season results.

That does not make Astralis irrelevant. It simply changes what success would look like.

Vitality enters tournaments expecting to compete for trophies. Astralis first needs to show that its current roster can consistently challenge the teams near the top.

The New Astralis Has a Different Identity

Rasmus “HooXi” Nielsen brings leadership experience from his time competing with G2 and other European teams. Jakob “jabbi” Nygaard and Victor “Staehr” Staehr already have considerable experience at a high level, while Love “phzy” Smidebrant and Gytis “ryu” Glušauskas help give this roster a new identity.

That makes the current Astralis an interesting team to follow.

Rather than expecting it to recreate the organization’s historic era, the better question is whether this particular lineup can develop its own style and produce consistent results.

Map selection will be especially important. Against similarly matched teams, preparation and a strong veto could give Astralis opportunities to build momentum. Against the strongest contenders, individual mistakes and weak opening rounds will be much harder to recover from.

Vitality vs Astralis Shows Two Different Stages of Team Building

Vitality and Astralis provide an interesting comparison because the two organizations currently sit at different stages.

Vitality already has a proven core capable of winning major events. The players understand their roles, have experience closing important series and know what it takes to survive deep tournament runs.

Astralis is still working towards that level of stability with its current lineup.

For Vitality, anything short of a deep run could feel disappointing. For Astralis, defeating a leading contender and reaching the later stages could represent meaningful progress.

That difference in expectations is one reason both teams are worth following.

Map Pools Could Decide the Toughest Matches

Individual skill gets plenty of attention in Counter-Strike, but tournament series can be heavily influenced before the first round begins.

The map veto determines where teams will play and can expose weaknesses that are difficult to hide in a best-of-three.

A team with several comfortable maps has more room to adapt. A roster relying heavily on one or two strong maps can become easier to prepare against as a tournament progresses.

For Vitality, roster depth gives the team several ways to approach difficult opponents. Astralis may need to be more selective and make sure its strongest maps remain available when facing higher-ranked opposition.

The deeper the tournament goes, the more important preparation becomes.

A Large Field Leaves Room for Surprises

A bigger tournament field also creates more opportunities for unexpected results.

Strong teams can be eliminated after one poor series, while a lower-ranked roster can build confidence after an early upset and suddenly become one of the tournament’s biggest stories.

The previous Esports World Cup CS2 event showed why overlooking challengers can be risky. The MongolZ won the 2025 tournament after defeating Aurora in the final, while Vitality’s run ended in the quarterfinals.

That is part of what makes international Counter-Strike tournaments interesting. Rankings and recent trophies establish expectations, but they do not guarantee results.

Form during the event itself can quickly become more important than what happened several months earlier.

Can Vitality Go All the Way?

Based on the results provided, Vitality has a strong case to be considered among the tournament’s leading contenders.

They have recent trophies, experienced players and one of Counter-Strike’s standout stars in ZywOo. More importantly, they have demonstrated that they can convert strong form into tournament wins.

Their biggest challenge may simply be maintaining that standard.

Leading teams rarely get easy matches because opponents prepare specifically for them. Vitality will need to adapt as the competition progresses and avoid giving challengers opportunities through poor starts or unnecessary mistakes.

If the roster performs near its recent level, another deep tournament run should be the expectation.

What Would Be a Good Tournament for Astralis?

Astralis enters with fewer expectations, which gives the roster a different opportunity.

A strong run would show that the current lineup is moving closer to competing consistently with the world’s best teams. Taking down one or two highly ranked opponents would be particularly encouraging.

The individual quality is there. The question is whether Astralis can combine it into consistent team performance across multiple series.

One upset would attract attention. Several strong performances would suggest something more meaningful.

Final Thoughts

Vitality and Astralis arrive at the Esports World Cup with very different stories.

Vitality has recent trophies and the kind of lineup expected to challenge for championships. ZywOo remains the headline player, but the team’s strength comes from having quality and experience across the roster.

Astralis carries one of Counter-Strike’s biggest names but is building a new chapter with a different lineup. Its history creates expectations, yet its current players need to establish what this version of Astralis can achieve.

And neither team exists in isolation. A large international field means other contenders and unexpected challengers can quickly change the tournament.

For Vitality, the goal is another title.

For Astralis, the tournament is another opportunity to show how close its new lineup is to competing with teams at the top.

That makes both worth watching, but for completely different reasons.
